Restoring Youth: Vaginoplasty

Aging and childbirth can affect more than just a woman’s outward appearance. It can have unwanted consequences on the inner parts as well. To correct the weathering of the vagina, a procedure known as a vaginoplasty is performed. The procedure is designed to restore vaginal tightness and elasticity lost from childbirth or aging. While it is true that tissues can stretch, surgically tightening the vaginal tissue in itself cannot guarantee a heightened sexual response.Arousal and orgasm are complex and highly personal, resulting from emotional as well as interpersonal factors. Furthermore, increased sensitivity does not necessarily lead to increased pleasure.

The primary benefit to female patients is the increased sense of esteem and body image they receive from the procedure. As with any cosmetic procedure, realistic expectations of the outcomes are essential. In addition to vaginal rejuvenation, a labiaplasty or plastic surgery on the labia can be performed in conjunction with a vaginoplasty. Surgery can be performed on the labia major or the labia minor altering their size and shape—making them smaller or correcting asymmetries.

At this point, it is important to note the difference between reconstructive and cosmetic surgeries. Reconstructive surgery is designed to improve function, while cosmetic surgery changes aesthetics of normally operating anatomy. This is an important distinction because some vaginoplasties were originally developed as reconstructive procedures to repair abnormalities arising from birth so that a girl could have normal urination and intercourse. More recently, these procedures have been marketed as vaginal rejuvenation. Recent advances in medical technique have introduced the laser to replace the scalpel. The point of this grouping of surgeries is to make women feel better about one of the most intimate parts of their bodies. Studies have shown that when women feel better about themselves, the higher their sexual response. And, in turn, their partners respond as well. Males that have had no cosmetic procedures performed have indeed reported a higher incidence of sexual satisfaction. Rejuvenation in plastic surgery goes far beyond the outer appearance. It can also restore that most important, and vital part of humanity.
