The Newbie’s Guide to Botox Cosmetic

Everyone has probably heard about BOTOX® Cosmetic and how it can shave years off your appearance without having to undergo a complicated face lift procedure; but, there is a lot of conflicting information out there about how effective it is or even how safe. If you are going to a class reunion or even out on a first date and want to look a little younger and fresher, BOTOX may be just the ticket.

First things first: BOTOX® Cosmetic is a transdermal filler that is injected into the muscles and is designed to minimize the appearance frown lines and creases between the eyebrows. This minimally invasive spa treatment is most appropriate for patients between 18 and 65 and is only a temporary fix. It was introduced in 2002 as the first cosmetic botulinum toxin to be approved by the FDA for plastic surgery. In fact, nearly 12 million BOTOX® procedures have been performed in the United States since 2002 with great effect. A recent study of more than 300 patients revealed that 92% were satisfied with the results of their experience.

BOTOX® Cosmetic has become an incredibly popular at parties, but must be administered by a healthcare professional, ideally a plastic surgeon. It basically works by blocking nerve impulses to the injected muscles which reduces muscle activity that causes moderate to severe creases to form on the forehead.

While there are inherent risks to any procedure, minimally invasive or not, you will be happy to note that according to the manufacturer, there has not been one confirmed serious case of spread of toxin effect away from the injection site when BOTOX® has been used at the recommended dose to treat frown lines. Despite some of the press that this and other minimally invasive injectable fillers have had over the years, this is a safe and government approved method to reduce fine lines and wrinkles on your forehead. That said, patient safety is a primary concern for plastic surgeons and that begins with the consultation. It is important to tell your doctor if have any allergies, side effects to any botulinum toxin substance in the past; breathing or swallowing problems; or have had surgery to your face.

Having a BOTOX treatment can help you look great right before that big day. It has been proven safe and effective. So, what are you waiting for?
