Woman with firm lifted breasts La San Diego.

An “internal bra” is a mesh-like structure that provides superior soft tissue support and stability in breast augmentation and revision surgery. Two of the most commonly used mesh devices are polydioxanone (PDO)-based DuraSorb, and poly-4-hydroxybutyrate (P4HB)-based GalaFLEX. These advanced materials are highly elastic, making it easier for a surgeon to maneuver and position implants. Their anti-adhesion specifications also reduce the risk of post-surgical complications and infection.

Dr. Ali Tehrani is an experienced plastic surgeon who specializes in breast augmentation and revision procedures. He understands the importance of achieving natural-looking, balanced results for his patients. With this revolutionary new technique, he can create a customized “internal bra”, resulting in breasts that fit your body perfectly. To contact Tehrani Plastic Surgery, call (949) 706-7776 to book a consultation at our La Jolla or Apple Valley location. You can also submit your request using the Inquire feature on our website.

The “Internal Bra”

Both DuraSorb and GalaFLEX create a flexible yet strong mesh that is ideal for breast augmentation. This mesh can be custom-fitted to your body shape, allowing for more secure, natural-appearing results. Additionally, because the mesh is made from biodegradable materials, it will not interfere with any future mammograms or medical treatments.

  • PDO – PDO is a bioabsorbable polymer used in many medical procedures. It is commonly used in dissolvable threads for cosmetic facial thread lifting, and is also used in the preparation of surgical sutures, medication delivery, and cardiovascular procedures. (1)
  • P4HB – P4HB is a bioabsorbable thermoplastic polyester that stretches with the application of weight. Other than breast procedures, it is commonly used in hernia repair and other tissue engineering applications to repair damaged or diseased tissues and organs. (2)

How Does a Mesh Device Support Breast Implants?

Bioabsorbable mesh provides a secure base for the implant. The mesh is also designed to prevent “bottoming out”, which is when the implant descends too far down the chest wall, resulting in an unnatural look. With their flexible nature, mesh devices like DuraSorb and GalaFLEX allow for a snug fit along the chest wall, resulting in a beautiful appearance, congruent with your unique body shape.

About DuraSorb

DuraSorb is a PDO-based mesh that provides effective breast pocket reinforcement. (3) It received FDA clearance in 2018 for the reinforcement of tissue where weakness exists, and is one of the best choices of “internal bra” material.

  • Fully resorbable knitted mesh
  • Used in reconstructive and aesthetic surgery
  • Promotes new collagen production
  • Completely absorbs into native tissues over time

About GalaFLEX

GalaFLEX is part of a new class of fiber-based products that repair soft tissue. (4) Received FDA clearance in 2007 for this purpose. Like DuraSorb, GalaFLEX is highly compatible with the human body, and an effective material for the internal mesh bra.

  • High strength scaffold
  • Pliable and flexible
  • Well-integrated into the body
  • Elevates and reinforces tissues

Benefits of DuraSorb & GalaFLEX

  • More natural-looking results
  • Improved implant durability
  • Reduced risk of complications
  • Improved comfort and stability
  • Increased flexibility
  • Less visible scarring

Above all else, mesh devices like DuraSorb and GalaFLEX offer the benefit of dependable, long-term durability. As the tissue heals around the implant, the mesh will slowly become incorporated into the body, providing additional structural support. The mesh also helps minimize the risk of complications associated with breast augmentation, such as capsular contracture, as well as improving patient satisfaction.

Candidates

Good candidates for breast augmentation with DuraSorb or GalaFLEX mesh are healthy adult women who want to enhance their breasts and improve their overall figure. Candidates should have realistic expectations about what their results will look like. Patients who have had a previous mastectomy may also seek internal mesh bra reconstruction. However, some patients may require additional procedures, such as fat grafting, to achieve optimal results.

Internal Mesh Bra for Breast Reconstruction

Breast reconstructive surgery is a personal choice for women who have undergone unilateral or bilateral mastectomy. One of the major issues after breast tissue removal is an uneven breast appearance, which is caused by an imbalance of the skin envelope size and breast shape and size. (3) Breast reconstruction with an internal mesh bra, addresses these issues, providing reliable physical support when you need it most.

FAQ

What is an internal bra procedure?

Galaflex and DuraSorb-based mesh devices are innovative bra-like supports for soft tissue and breast implants. They are highly elastic, which means surgeons are able to maneuver and position implants with more ease and accuracy. Internal bra materials are body-safe, and eventually incorporated into surrounding tissues over time.

Does a GalaFLEX or DuraSorb breast augmentation take longer than a normal breast augmentation?

Although it depends on the individual being treated, patients can expect to add a further two hours to a standard breast augmentation with the addition of GalaFLEX or DuraSorb mesh.

How do I know if an internal mesh bra procedure is right for me?

One of the best ways to find out if an internal mesh breast augmentation is right for you is to speak to a board-certified plastic surgeon. They can give you informed medical advice according to your unique circumstances.

What is the best breast reconstruction option after a mastectomy?

As mastectomy results differ greatly from patient to patient, it is most useful to speak to a professional if you are looking for delayed reconstruction following a mastectomy. Schedule a meeting with a board-certified plastic surgeon with breast reconstruction experience for the most trustworthy advice.
