VASER liposuction is a cosmetic procedure that strategically removes excess fat using ultrasound-assisted liposuction (UAL). VASER (Vibration Amplification of Sound Energy at Resonance) is a revolutionary type of liposuction that destroys fat cells deep within the superficial fascia for more precise results. (1) Known for its ability to emulsify fat, VASER is often applied to contour the abdomen to rid patients of stubborn belly fat.

Board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon Dr. Ali Tehrani treats all of his patients with concerted and compassionate care. With an artistic eye and many years of experience, he helps his patients achieve their desired body contour. What is VASER Liposuction?

VASER liposuction uses ultrasonic energy to liquefy the fat before it is removed. After its invention in 2001, VASER quickly became a popular and safe way for surgeons to quickly remove adipose tissue. Unlike traditional liposuction which requires more human effort and takes longer to perform, VASER uses ultrasonic energy before suction to break up the fat with less manpower. It is currently regarded as the “gold standard” of body contouring methods. (2)

VASER Ultrasonic Energy and Its Efficacy

The VASER liposuction system utilizes a powerful ultrasonic probe to break up the fat before it is removed by a thin and hollow needle (cannula). This energy’s resonance is similar to the resonance of fat, meaning the surrounding tissue is unaffected by the ultrasound. VASER liposuction preserves the nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue located near the targeted fat, preventing excess bleeding and damage. After using the ultrasound probe, the surgeon uses a cannula to remove the emulsified tissue. (2)

The efficacy and safety of VASER are outweighed only by its accuracy. Since the system targets both deep and superficial tissue, it achieves more precise and targeted removal. This leads to highly customizable procedure plans. VASER liposuction can be used basically anywhere on the body including:

  • Abdomen
  • Flanks (sides)
  • Back
  • Buttocks
  • Arms
  • Inner and outer thighs
  • Knees
  • Ankles
  • Chin
  • Neck

Whether you are looking to add structure and tone to your abdomen, thighs, and arms, or you want to target more delicate features, VASER liposuction can be utilized. Dr. Tehrani can treat one or multiple areas of the body with one surgery, customizing each plan to the patient.

Benefits of VASER Liposuction

This application is considered safer than traditional liposuction, often providing more defined and satisfactory results. It can:

  • Remove stubborn fat
  • Improve body contour
  • Define muscles and curves
  • Improve the appearance of cellulite

With VASER:

  • Less swelling/bruising
  • Less blood loss
  • More selective when targeting fat
  • Fat removal from both deep and superficial tissue layer
  • Ability to treat many areas at once

Ideal Candidates

A good candidate is someone who cannot seem to get rid of certain pockets of fat collection through diet and exercise alone. Exercise-resistant adipose tissue tends to reside in isolation around the abdomen, thighs, and arms depending on the patient. VASER liposuction is not considered a weight loss surgery. Patients must be at an ideal and consistent weight to receive it.

They must also have good skin elasticity. Though the ultrasonic energy provides slight skin tightening, it cannot correct large amounts of excess skin. Should you require excess skin removal and muscle tightening in the abdomen, Dr. Tehrani may recommend a tummy tuck. Patients must also be in good health with no underlying conditions that might hinder their recovery. They are also required to have reasonable expectations in regard to this body contouring procedure.

Personal Consultation with Dr. Tehrani

Dr. Tehrani will meet with you privately to discuss VASER liposuction and whether it is right for you. He will inquire about your lifestyle and daily routines, and you will provide us with your medical history. He will perform a physical examination of the targeted area(s) to assess your overall health and skin condition. Dr. Tehrani will then ask about your cosmetic concerns and desires. If you meet the criteria, he will explain exactly what happens during VASER treatment to prepare you for surgery. A member of his team will then assist you in scheduling your procedure and follow-up appointments.

Preparation

Leading up to VASER liposuction, please avoid:

  • Tobacco and nicotine products
  • Alcohol
  • NSAIDs like aspirin
  • Certain herbal remedies and dietary supplements
  • Medications that impede healing

It is important to manage stress levels before any surgical procedure. We also suggest preparing a section of your home for comfortable healing. Although VASER typically requires less downtime than traditional methods, you must still take some time off of work. Please arrange a ride to and from Tehrani Plastic Surgery and pick up any prescription medications before your surgery appointment.

VASER Liposuction Procedure

Dr. Tehrani starts VASER liposuction by marking the treatment area to plan out his approach. He then administers a local anesthetic and infiltrates the area with tumescent fluid. This fluid typically contains a numbing agent such as lidocaine to prepare the treatment area for liposuction. After infiltration, Dr. Tehrani uses theVASER probe to apply uniform ultrasonic energy to the fat. He inserts this through a very small incision in the skin. Once the fat is liquified, Dr. Tehrani suctions it out with a long cannula. With the help of the tumescent fluid and VASER ultrasonic energy, this procedure is safe, effective, and fast – typically only taking 1 to 2 hours to complete, depending on the number of treatment areas.

Recovery

The first couple of days after VASER liposuction bring the most discomfort. Take short and gentle walks to keep your blood flowing, but do not overexert yourself. Recovery is dependent on the areas being treated and amount of fat removed, but expect a fairly quick healing period. You may return to work after 2 or 3 days. There will be swelling and bruising that may persist for 2 to 4 months. Dr. Tehrani provides a compression garment that should be worn to preserve your results and aid residual swelling. Avoid any strenuous activity and exercise for at least six weeks, and drink plenty of fluids to keep yourself hydrated.

Liposuction Results

You may notice immediate results after VASER liposuction. These results improve over time as your swelling subsides, and your final contour will not be visible until you are fully healed. Depending on the treatment area, this happens anywhere from 4 to 6 months after your surgery.

Liposuction permanently removes fat cells from the treatment areas, but cannot prevent future weight gain. After the recovery period, establishing an exercise routine and healthy eating habits helps you preserve your results and keep your new contour.

Corresponding & Complementary Procedures

BodyTite

After liposuction procedures, some patients are left with loose skin. To remedy this, BodyTite is a minimally-invasive treatment that utilizes regulated radiofrequency to tighten the skin from underneath. Dr. Tehrani commonly combines liposuction and BodyTite with ease to improve your contour and avoid more invasive skin tightening procedures. BodyTite is inserted into the same incision used for VASER liposuction before the fat is emulsified. The thermal energy induces collagen production that continues for months after the treatment itself. The skin tightens immediately and only gets better over time.

VASER HI-DEF Liposuction

Using the same ultrasonic technology, VASER HI-DEF liposuction focuses on providing even greater muscle definition and contouring. If you want to accentuate your abs or the outline of your waist, Dr. Tehrani can implement VASER’s innovative systems to help you achieve your desired body contour. It can be used to treat the abdomen, flanks, buttocks, thighs, and arms to tone your entire physique.

FAQ

What makes VASER liposuction different?

Unlike traditional liposuction methods, VASER liposuction utilizes ultrasound technology to specifically target and break down fat cells while preserving surrounding tissues. This precision allows for smoother results and reduced damage to blood vessels and nerves.

How many VASER liposuction treatments will I need to achieve my cosmetic goals?

Most patients need only one procedure to reach their desired contour. If necessary, shorter and more focused sessions can be performed after a patient is fully healed to augment results.

Will the incisions used for VASER liposuction require stitches?

The small incisions created during liposuction procedures do not typically require sutures. In fact, they usually start to heal within the following 48 hours. Keep them clean and dry to avoid infection.

How does VASER liposuction break down fat?

Ultrasound technology breaks down fat cells into a liquid state, allowing for easier removal through gentle suction. This method targets specific areas of concern without affecting the surrounding tissues, resulting in smoother contours and precise fat reduction.
