Mini Facelift

Consultations offered at our three convenient locations in La Jolla, CA, Apple Valley, CA and Newport Beach, CA

A mini facelift is a cosmetic surgical procedure that repositions sagging facial tissues and eliminates loose skin. This rejuvenating procedure is a modified version of a traditional facelift, in which your surgeon places incisions around the ears behind the hairline to lift and tighten the face. A mini-facelift uses shorter incisions so that the lower face and upper neck can be improved. (1) It’s also referred to as a limited-incision facelift. Targeting specifically the lower third of the face and jawline, a mini facelift addresses the most common areas where signs of aging first appear, but offers a shorter recovery time, and subtle, natural-looking results.

Before and After Photos

What Causes Skin Aging?

There are several factors that cause and intensify the natural aging process. As we get older, collagen production decreases and our skin’s elasticity begins to decline. Once this process

begins, the signs of aging slowly begin to appear. Other factors that contribute to skin aging include extended exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light and environmental toxins such as air pollution and cigarette smoke. (2)

Luckily, advances in cosmetic surgery approaches and techniques have allowed patients to enjoy more effective options for delaying the aging process and maintaining a youthful, radiant appearance. And, as more people are looking for preventative measures, mini facelifts have become a popular and effective way to achieve aesthetically pleasing results.

Mini Facelift Candidates

Good candidates for mini facelifts are younger patients who are looking for a subtle improvement, as well as those who only wish to address the lower part of their face. It’s a good option for those who aren’t ready for a full facelift, or who want a less invasive procedure with a shorter recovery time. Candidates should however be in good overall health, regardless of their age. During your personal consultation, Dr. Tehrani will be able to determine if you’re a candidate for a mini facelift, or whether another procedure would best meet your needs. He may also recommend adding a brow lift or eyelid surgery if additional areas of your face are displaying signs of aging.

Personal Consultation

A mini facelift is only performed after there is a personal consultation. This appointment is an essential part of the process, as it is an opportunity for Dr. Tehrani to understand your exact needs and outline a treatment plan. Because his patients’ safety and success are his priorities, personal consultations are an essential way for Dr. Tehrani to build a successful doctor-to-patient relationship. During the appointment, he will analyze your skin concerns, features, and structure while discussing procedure details. After establishing the correct approach and a customized treatment plan, Dr. Tehrani will discuss preoperative and postoperative instructions, as well as cover any important details about the mini facelift. Dr. Tehrani will then thoroughly describe the results of a mini facelift, recovery, and potential side effects to ensure that you are as educated as possible about the procedure. Preparing for a Mini Facelift Procedure

Preparation before surgery is essential in order to achieve optimal health and desired results. There are a few significant steps that are recommended before surgery. Utilizing these tasks encourages a smooth procedure, healthy recovery, and rewarding results. Pre-operative steps include:

  • Avoid smoking and drinking alcohol for at least two weeks before the procedure and during recovery
  • Make sure that you have transportation arranged to and from surgery, since you will not be able to drive yourself home.
  • Attend all preoperative appointments and maintain consistent communication with Dr. Tehrani
  • Don’t use any harsh cosmetic products, fragrances, lotion, or any other item that contains irritating ingredients before your surgery
  • Arrive for your procedure in clothing that is comfortable and easy to change in

Procedure

A mini facelift will begin with the administration of either general or local anesthesia. Once you’re under anesthesia, your surgeon will place small incisions that are hidden along the natural curves of your ears and concealed beneath your hairline. The skin is then separated from the underlying tissues. This allows Dr. Tehrani access to the superficial musculoaponeurotic system, or SMAS. (3) This layer of tissue can be manipulated and repositioned to lift sagging facial features and restore volume to areas like the cheeks. Once it has been modified, the overlying skin is redraped over the rejuvenated contours, and any excess skin is trimmed away before the incisions are closed.

What is Mini Facelift Recovery Like?

It is crucial to practice care instructions after surgery, as postoperative steps have a large impact on your overall recovery. With diligent attention, proper hygiene, and patience during recovery, the chance of experiencing negative side effects is significantly reduced. These vital tasks will shorten recovery time, limit the risk of infection, and encourage healthy healing. Since each patient is provided a unique treatment plan, recovery times and details vary from patient to patient. However, most patients are able to return to light activity in a week or two. Avoid strenuous activity like exercise for at least six weeks. These tasks are also recommended as part of your postoperative plan:

  • Sleep in an elevated position, with extra pillows propped below your head to help reduce swelling.
  • Take medications as instructed
  • Avoid taking over-the-counter medications such as aspirin or motrin that may worsen bleeding for a minimum of two weeks before and after surgery
  • Incorporate high-nutrient foods in your diet such as spinach, salmon, lean chicken, blueberries, flax seeds, and avocado. Avoid the consumption of high-sodium foods, and focus on wholesome foods that will help improve energy levels and nourish the body.

FAQ

How long is the recovery process after a mini facelift?

Typically, recovery for a mini facelift takes between 1-3 weeks. However, the amount of time it takes to fully recover from the procedure depends on the client’s individual health factors, as well as the condition of their skin prior to the lift.

What’s the difference between a mini facelift and a full facelift?

A mini facelift is a less-invasive procedure than full facelift, and typically can be performed in less time. A mini facelift is an exceptional option for those who are starting to notice signs of aging and are seeking improvement in their appearance without a dramatic transformation. It’s also a good option for those who may need a more extensive procedure, such as a full facelift, but don’t have the time or desire to go through the bigger surgery and longer recovery.

How long does a mini facelift last?

If all proper care instructions are met after surgery, a mini facelift can last anywhere between two to six years on average. It is very important for patients to prioritize a healthy lifestyle to ensure successful results. A healthy lifestyle and a good skin care routine, can extend results. In addition, patients should not smoke, as this activity is detrimental to skin and overall health.
